‘Nawiri’ is Kiswahili for ‘to flourish, thrive’, reflecting our vision of
creating a future where vital ecosystems and local communities thrive together
The Nawiri Foundation is a Tanzanian registered NGO that facilitates the NawiriGroup impact agenda in Tanzania.
The NawiriGroup recognises and seek to address two major challenges: substantive biodiversity loss in globally critical ecosystems, and entrenched poverty among the communities living around them. Our vision is to use our purpose-led business model and impact agenda as a platform to address these interconnected issues, building a future where ecosystems and local communities thrive together.
Our impact work in East Africa dates back 20 years. In 2019 we formalised our commitment to impact setting up a foundation, then known as Asilia Giving, and which was rebranded to Nawiri Foundation in October 2023 following the creation of NawiriGroup, allowing us to scale up our impact agenda. The foundations' primary role is to manage our impact funds, channelling them to our implementation partners in Tanzania and overseeing the programmes we invest in.
The Nawiri Foundation operates three key programmes in Tanzania
Asilia Giving
This programme, funded through Asilia Africa's bednight level of USD$10 per person per night which is then matched by NawiriGroup profits, supports several projects throughout Tanzania. Primarily on these projects we are joining broader efforts as one of many funders to help drive collective progress on big challenges.
Impact at Scale
Our Impact at Scale programme, financed through grant funding from NawiriGroup investors, directs resources to grassroots NGOs—local experts solving critical challenges on the ground. These partners, already making a difference in the ecosystems where we operate, share our vision of helping people and ecosystems thrive together. We offer a long-term funding commitment, providing them with the stability to focus on strategic, transformative work that scales up their impact and education initiatives.
USAID
Our USAID funded programme focused on the foundation's conservation efforts in the Kwakuchinja corridor. This area between Lake Manyara Biosphere Reserve and Tarangire National Park is crucial to maintaining the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem. This is a project we took full ownership of, using our resources and experience to deliver targeted activities where most needed.
Across the vast wilderness areas of Tanzania people are custodians of significant natural wealth—forests, wildlife, and biodiversity. Yet these ecosystems, which hold enormous economic potential, generate little or no financial return for the people who protect them and they are often left to bear significant burdens as a result living alongside protected areas.
The lack of meaningful returns from natural capital presents a low bar for unsustainable activities to seem more attractive. At the same time, traditional agricultural methods degrade land, further eroding natural resources and reducing productivity. Compounding the problem, limited access to quality education locks these communities into poverty, restricting their ability to pursue alternative livelihoods.
The result is a persistent cycle of poverty and environmental degradation, where communities are forced to engage in unsustainable practices such as overgrazing or deforestation just to survive.
Our solution is to address these issues through three interconnected strategies:
Unlocking the economic value of natural capital by connecting communities to markets, diversifying livelihood opportunities and strengthening governance.
Regenerating degraded land and shifting agricultural practices toward more sustainable, productive methods.
Educating communities to build skills and opportunities for broader, sustainable livelihoods, beyond reliance on natural resources.
By aligning economic incentives with sustainable practices and providing the tools for long-term success, this strategy creates a pathway for both people and nature to thrive.
